Anyway, you might want to take a few notes, because what I’m about to tell you is very important to the topic of this blog post! Get Organized One of my struggles in art is my instinctive inability to keep myself organized and stick to schedules. That’s mainly because I am an INFP, and if you know anything about the 16 personalities, the fourth letter, J or P, determines organization. So those of you who are J types will find this step a lot easier than those with P in their personality type. Now let’s focus: In order for this to work, you’ll need a few organization tools, like maybe a small notebook or (preferably weekly) planner. And do your best to stick to this; something that helps me is setting reminders on my phone. Identify Your Weak Points Now what you need to do is look at your art and decide what you’re worst at drawing. For me, one of these is probably perspective in characters. And now that you’ve done that, go back to your organization tool. Write down all of these weak points in your art. Then, split them up by assigning one weak point per week. My suggestion is just that it be weekly, but it can be monthly or whatever works for you. Plan Action Steps Once a week——or whatever interval of time you chose to split your weak points between——you should take at least one day to focus on improving that point. Now, you need to do something to improve that’s related to that, but it needs to be effective and achievable. For example, I do my best to take a skillshare class, watch an online video, or study photos or other artworks. Last year, I realized I struggled greatly in perspective for backgrounds, so I took a skillshare class on perspective. Keep Practicing to Increase Effectiveness After you’ve taken an action step to improve one of your weak points, do your best to practice it later. You can choose to incorporate it into your illustration style, or you can draw small sketches now and then. Do This CONSISTENTLY Consistency is key! Make sure you’re taking time to take action steps regularly. Otherwise, you won’t improve as quickly. That’s why the first step, Get Organized, is so important! Using tools like schedules and to-do lists will help you greatly here.
